Democrats Said Noncitizens Never Vote. New Jersey Just Proved Them Wrong

Then Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey was forced to admit the truth.

Between June 2023 and June 2024, under the previous Democratic administration of Phil Murphy, New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission system registered approximately 6,600 noncitizens to vote. Roughly 400 of them cast ballots. These people told the system they were not U.S. citizens. The system registered them anyway.

This is not a right-wing theory. This is the Democratic governor of a blue state acknowledging it in public.

It Wasn’t Just a “Glitch”

Sherrill blamed a “software glitch.” The software company that ran the system, IDEMIA, rejected that excuse. According to the company, the 6,600 individuals correctly answered “No” when asked if they were U.S. citizens and “Yes” when asked if they wanted to register to vote. That information was recorded accurately. It was never flipped. The data was transmitted to the Division of Elections, which is responsible for verifying eligibility. The state failed to stop them.

IDEMIA Senior Vice President Lisa Shoemaker stated: “All 6,600 individuals indicated ‘Yes’ to wanting to register to vote and ‘No’ to being a US Citizen. This information was recorded correctly and always available to the MVC via the database... At no point was a noncitizen ever marked as a citizen in the database.” The company emphasized that its role is to transmit self-reported data and that the New Jersey Division of Elections is ultimately responsible for validating eligibility.

In other words, this was not a mysterious computer error that magically turned noncitizens into citizens on paper. It was a systemic failure under Democratic control. The state had the information and still put noncitizens on the voter rolls. Only years later, under pressure, did the new Democratic governor disclose it and begin cleaning it up.

This matches a pattern conservatives have warned about for years: automatic voter registration combined with weak citizenship checks creates exactly this vulnerability.

How New Jersey Made It Easier

New Jersey made the problem worse by design. In 2019, Democratic Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation (commonly called the Green Light law) that took effect in 2021, allowing residents living in the state illegally to obtain standard driver’s licenses. Combine that with automatic voter registration at the Motor Vehicle Commission, and you create a direct pipeline from noncitizens into the voter rolls.

When you flood the country with millions of illegal immigrants, give them benefits, housing, healthcare, in-state tuition discounts, and driver’s licenses, then run automatic registration systems that do not rigorously verify citizenship, you get noncitizens on the rolls. Some of them vote. That is not a conspiracy theory. That is the predictable result of policy.

Democrats spent years claiming this was impossible. They were wrong.

Small Numbers Can Decide Elections

Defenders will say “only” 400 voted and no major race was flipped. That is the same argument they always make: if it is not millions, it does not count.

Tell that to the 2000 presidential election. Florida was decided by 537 votes. Countless congressional, state, and local races have been decided by far fewer. When elections are close, every illegal vote dilutes the voice of American citizens. Democrats know this. That is why they fight so hard against basic safeguards.

The Real Agenda

Why leave the border open for years? Why expand benefits and licenses for people here illegally? Why oppose voter ID and documentary proof of citizenship at every turn?

The answer is power. Democrats failed for decades to pass mass amnesty. So they pursued the next best option: expand the noncitizen population, ease registration, resist verification, and hope the numbers eventually tip elections in their favor. When caught, they call it a “glitch,” claim it never happens, or insist the numbers are too small to matter.

Meanwhile, the American people consistently support the opposite approach. Poll after poll shows large majorities—often including many Democrats—favor photo voter ID and requiring proof of citizenship to register. The SAVE Act, which would require documentary proof of citizenship for federal voter registration, is exactly the kind of common-sense reform this episode demands. It has passed the House. Senate Democrats have blocked it.

President Trump and his administration are right to treat this seriously. The Justice Department is already pressing New Jersey for the records. DHS has flagged far larger potential mismatches in other states. The pattern is clear: without real citizenship verification, noncitizens end up on the rolls and some of them vote.

The Bottom Line

It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote. That has never stopped crime in any other area of life, and it has not stopped this. New Jersey just gave the country a concrete example under Democratic governance: thousands registered, hundreds voted, and the excuse was a “glitch” that the software company itself rejected.

Citizens-only elections are not radical. They are the foundation of a sovereign republic. Voter ID is not suppression. Proof of citizenship is not extreme. Open borders plus automatic registration without verification is a direct threat to election integrity.

Democrats said it never happens. New Jersey proved them wrong. The only remaining question is whether Congress will finally act—or continue pretending the problem does not exist.
